There's an open source framework we use that is a fully featured short URL "engine". Basically, you register your own personal short domain name, host the framework on your server, and then you have your very own personalised URL shortener matching your brand. Rather than bit.ly and goo.gl etc.
You can use this to make any URL short using your own domain name, and keep track of statistics such as hits, dates, traffic geolocation and such.
For example, The Investment Coach has set up a short domain name called "invcoa.ch" (courtesy of the Swiss .CH top level domain [TLD]), and then using the framework, you can shorten any URL using this domain name, like: invcoa.ch/ABC123
Other ideas: Dennis Hall, Yellowtail could be yellta.il (courtesy of the Israeli TLD)
We recommend the services of http://www.shorturls.co.uk for your own fully hosted, managed and personalised Short URLs.
